“Jerk!” I said loudly, trying to wake him. Wait a minute; was that his name? “Juke!” I tried again. It didn’t matter. He was dead to the world. I was in this one alone, just me against the iguana.

My enemy knew it had me where it wanted me. It materialized inside the tiny compartment. Despite myself, I gasped. It was the most gruesome apparition I could have imagined. It had cold banker’s eyes and a used car salesman’s gaping grin. The cold indifference of a prostitute oozed from every pore. Its teeth were from a divorce attorney’s contract and its claws were from a collection agency. I was an easy trophy for its wall, a Bambi to display among many heavy-antlered heads. It would use me cruelly, as a junior high school gym teacher would, before dashing me senseless. It was the prom queen and I was the guy who understood algebra. It was the Internal Revenue Service and I had lost my receipts. I was helpless.
